A compact, muscular, powerful dog, the Doberman has been built for great endurance and speed. His appearance is elegant with a proud carriage, reflecting great nobility; it is often said that he bears a likeness to a thoroughbred horse. He is energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal, and obedient. His head resembles a blunt wedge and the almond shaped, moderately deep set eyes have a vigorous, energetic expression. Ears are normally cropped and carried erect. The tail is usually docked at about the second joint and appears to be a continuation of the spine. This is a smooth haired breed, the short, hard, thick coat lying loose. Colors are black, red, blue, fawn, and sometimes white, with sharply defined rust markings above each eye and on the muzzle, throat, forechest, on all legs and feet, and below the tail.
